Derrick “Duckie” Simpson is the founder and driving force behind Black Uhuru, one of the most influential reggae bands to emerge since the 1970s. Hailing from the Waterhouse district in Kingston, Jamaica, the group has seen many line-up changes over the years. Originally formed with Don Carlos and Garth Dennis, Black Uhuru rose to international fame when Michael Rose and Sandra “Puma” Jones joined the mix.

With their signature blend of deep basslines and powerful rhythms, the band crafted a sound all their own, delivering hits like Shine Eye Gal and What is Life. In 1984, they made history by winning the very first Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with Anthem. Through every twist and turn, Duckie Simpson has remained the heart and soul of Black Uhuru. Most recently, the band released New Day in May 2022, continuing to build on their rich musical legacy.
