Tonight, we take you on a journey through a true piece of reggae history. The Congos are one of the last Jamaican groups still performing with their original lineup since the 1970s — and you can still hear that deep connection in their live shows. With Heart of The Congos (1977), recorded at Lee “Scratch” Perry’s iconic Black Ark studio, they released one of the ten greatest reggae albums of all time, filled with roots reggae classics like La La Bam Bam, Open The Gate, Congo Man, and of course, the legendary Fisherman.
Although the group split up in the 1980s, they made a powerful comeback in 2006 with the critically acclaimed albums Swinging Bridge and Back in the Black Ark (2009). With their unique vocal harmonies, deep basslines, and lyrics rich in political and spiritual meaning, it’s no surprise that this band continues to be a major influence on a whole new generation of reggae fans.
