Black Uhuru is set to perform at Paradiso in Amsterdam. Black Uhuru (Black Liberation) is a legendary reggae group with over 45 years of history. Founder Derrick “Duckie” Simpson remains the constant force behind the band, preserving its iconic sound despite numerous lineup changes. The current lineup features Duckie alongside Andrew “Bees” Beckford and Elsa Green. Known for their deep basslines, powerful drums, and signature “woh oh oh’s,” the band scored hits like I Love King Selassie, Shine Eye Gal, and What Is Life.

Black Uhuru toured with major acts such as The Rolling Stones and The Police, solidifying their status as international reggae pioneers. In 1984, Black Uhuru became the first reggae band to win a Grammy Award for their album Anthem.

In 2022, they released their latest album New Day, featuring contributions from Dylan Dharma, King Hopeton, and Andrew Bees. With a fresh take on traditional reggae, Black Uhuru continues to stay relevant in today’s music scene, addressing social issues in songs like Jamaica to Here and Helltown.

This June, Black Uhuru will return to Paradiso in Amsterdam for the ninth time – and for the first time in 18 years.
