Burning Spear is coming to OLT Rivierenhof in Antwerp! Winston Rodney, better known as Burning Spear, is a cornerstone of reggae music. His influence extends far beyond his Jamaican background. Throughout his illustrious career, which spans more than five decades. Rodney’s music has been a beacon of resistance, emancipation, and cultural pride. More than anyone else in the legendary generation of roots reggae of the 70s (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer), he is both a deeply Rastafarian believer and a black historian, a conviction he shares with a wide audience, from young to old. His distinctive singing, infused with spirituality and social commentary, has become synonymous with the essence of reggae. And the strong string of successive albums in the 70s made him the legend he is today.
From his early days at Studio One to his groundbreaking albums like “Marcus Garvey” and “Marcus’ Children,” Burning Spear’s lyrics have served as a powerful voice for the oppressed and marginalized, advocating for themes of black consciousness, African unity, and Rastafarian ideology. Check out songs “Marcus Garvey”, “Slavery Days” and “Hail H.I.M.”, which are considered primal classics of the genre.
