Black Uhuru is coming to Het Bolwerk in Sneek and to Willemeen in Arnhem. This legendary reggae formation has been one of Jamaica’s most popular and prolific reggae bands for over 50 years. This reggae band has achieved numerous successes in the music industry. Including winning the very first Grammy Award for reggae music.
Their long-lasting success, the highest reggae record sales after Bob Marley, and the most sampled songs by other artists have made them reggae ambassadors over the years. With deep basslines, powerful drums, and their signature “woh oh oh’s,” the band scored hits like “I Love King Sellassie,” “Shine Eye Gals,” and “What Is Life.”
Black Uhuru toured with icons like The Rolling Stones and The Police, further cementing their status as international reggae pioneers. In 1984, Black Uhuru became the first reggae band to win a Grammy Award, for their album Anthem. In 2022, they released their latest album New Day, featuring contributions from Dylan Dharma, King Hopeton, and Andrew Bees. With a fresh take on traditional reggae, Black Uhuru remains relevant in today’s scene, tackling social issues in tracks like “Jamaica to Here” and “Helltown.”
