Get ready for a reggae explosion! On Saturday, July 19, the legendary U-Brown will light up Rastaplas Festival in Zoetermeer with the mighty Asham Band at his side. With his signature toasting style and uplifting roots vibes, U-Brown is set to turn the lakeside festival into a true celebration of reggae culture. Expect heavyweight riddims, timeless anthems, and pure Jamaican energy as one of the genre’s true pioneers takes the stage!

Hugh Brown is a Jamaican reggae singer and deejay, best known for his contributions during the 1970s and 1980s. Sometimes performing under the name U Brown, he built his reputation in Kingston’s vibrant sound system culture. Particularly with King Tubby’s legendary sound system. His style blended toasting (early Jamaican rap) with conscious, roots-oriented lyrics, heavily influenced by pioneers like U-Roy.

Brown’s debut album, Mr. Brown Something, released in the mid-1970s, established his mellow, rhythmic delivery and socially aware messages. He went on to record several well-received albums, including Satta Dread and Jam It Tonight. Helping to bridge the gap between roots reggae and the emerging dancehall scene. Brown was also an important mentor to younger artists and worked as a producer, further shaping reggae’s evolution.

While never as internationally famous as Bob Marley or Peter Tosh, Hugh Brown is respected in reggae circles for his smooth voice, lyrical dexterity, and authentic representation of Jamaican culture. His contributions continue to influence modern reggae and dancehall artists.
