ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH UNIVERSE OF SOUND – From 16 to 22 August 2022, the concert venue in Benicàssim (Castelló) will become the circuit of a planetary sound journey guided by the Rototom Sunsplash. The international reggae festival offers for its 27th edition, the reunion after the pandemic, 73 hours of music and more than 80 concerts and sessions on its six stages intermingling the diversity of musical genres with the international mix of artists.
Vibrate
Thus, this 2022, the Rototom audience will vibrate to the rhythm. The rhytm of reggae, roots, afrobeats, dub, dancehall, ska, hip hop and rap. As well as Balkan beats, cumbia, trap and punk in a transcontinental journey. They will be immersed in the European scene, with a tour of Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom. The line-up visits Jamaica, Cuba, Saint Lucia, Brazil, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Colombia, Suriname, Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States, and will continue to Africa: from Mali to Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea and Burundi. New Caledonia, Japan and Israel reinforce the international nature of the cultural macro-city.
Burning Spear
The highlight of this sound horizon will be the roots reggae of the headliner Burning Spear – who will be one of the most eagerly awaited performances on the Main Stage on 22 August – along with other leading figures of the genre such as Luciano, Black Uhuru, The Abyssinians, Max Romeo, Clinton Fearon and Sly Dunbar & The Revolutionaries. Contemporary reggae will be brought by the Marley’s (Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ and Julian), Morgan Heritage and Alborosie; and the festival’s Afrobeats will be provided by Davido. There will also be ska (The Skatalites), dub (O.B.F), dancehall (Sean Paul), hip hop (Mala Rodríguez) and cumbia, with La Dame Blanche.
It is precisely the Cuban artist who represents the wealth of female voices that this edition will bring together, and who reflect this successful opening to the new musical styles that enrich the event, such as KT Gorique (hip hop-rap), Samora (reggae, dancehall and afrobeats), Nkulee Dube (African reggae) or Dub Princess (reggae-dub), without forgetting the reggae artists Xana Romeo or Soom T, together with the special show of the Balkan Paradise Orchestra from Barcelona, in an exclusive format for Rototom.
Yannis Odua from France; Marcus Gad from New Caledonia; or the aforementioned Nkulee Dube from South Africa ratify the transcontinental dimension of the reggae event. A 27th anniversary that continues to consolidate the cosmopolitan profile of Sunsplash with The Dualers and Natty (UK); Lion D + Raphael (Italy); Iqulah Rastafari and Mighty Mystic (Jamaica); Soul Rebel Project (USA); Tiwony (France); Blend Mishkin (Greece) and Young Israelites (Israel).
Musical Novelties
The 2022 edition also comes with musical novelties. In addition to its legendary stages: Main Stage (27 performances), Lion Stage (28 concerts), Dancehall and Dub Academy (with 23 and 26 sets, respectively) and Jumping (with 4 DJs a day), comes Voodoo, a dance club at the heart of Jamkunda – the reformulated African Village – in the heart of the concert venue and to which the collective of the same name, Voodoo, promoter of Afrobeats, and by extension of African music and also of the continent’s avant-garde culture, gives the pulse.
With three sets, Voodoo Club fits in with the eclectic stamp that the space itself emanates and promises intense evenings impregnated not only with Afrobeats, but also with Afrohouse, dancehall, funk and disco music. Fortalezza (Madrid); Dj Dada; MC Chanti; SlimboyFlacko; Hirma (Switzerland); Selectya Glossy; Oseka DJ Set; Naguiyami; Sunkusi Collective (Dj Owey, BuBu Sound, Soribah) and Wekafore DJ Set are part of Voodoo Club’s staging for Rototom Sunsplash.
Next Sunday, 31 July, daily tickets and multi-day tickets from two to seven days to enjoy the 2022 edition, with or without camping, will change price. This new rate, in force from August 1st, will remain unchanged until the start of the festival and for its duration. Until the last weekend of the month, the public will be able to live the Rototom experience for only 27 euros per day (32 euros with camping) if they buy the 7 day ticket.
